Berry Hill sits about a mile and a half north of Coleford. We treat it as part of the same patch. The village takes in Five Acres, Christchurch, Shortstanding and Joyford, so a call out here can be anything from a bungalow off the main road to a cottage down a forest lane.

Berry Hill homes and their wiring
People have built homes on this land since the 1500s. By 1782 there were 23 cottages spread over the ground north of Coleford. Many more cottages and houses went up after 1840. Across the Forest, cottages from that time were often built of local sandstone.
By 1874, Berry Hill, Five Acres, Joyford and Shortstanding had 295 houses between them. Joyford alone had 40 cottages back in 1782, with 12 of them up the hill at the Lonk.
The council came next. In 1923 it built 16 homes between Berry Hill and Five Acres, called the Coverham estate. From 1923 to 1934 the council built 44 more houses east of the Five Acres road. More council estates followed after the war, including one north of the Rising Sun in the 1960s. Private houses went up west of the Five Acres road after 1960.
That gives a mix of old stone cottages, 1920s and 1930s council homes and post war houses. Old cottages often have wiring added bit by bit over the years. Older council homes may still have an early fuse box. We test first so you know what you have.
