How Often Should a Fuse Box Be Replaced?

There is no set lifespan and no rule saying you must replace a fuse box after so many years. A board is replaced when it stops giving the protection a modern one would, or when testing shows it is no longer up to the job. In practice that means most boards fitted before the early 2000s are worth changing, and anything with rewirable fuses or no RCD protection is worth changing now.

The signs are easy to spot. A board with old-style ceramic fuses you rewire by hand. A plastic unit with no test button. Breakers that trip for no obvious reason. Scorch marks or a smell of hot plastic. Any of those is worth a look. We test the circuits first, tell you honestly whether a swap is the right move and price it at one fixed figure before starting.

No fixed lifespan

Age alone does not condemn a board. What matters is the protection it gives and what the testing shows.

The clear cases

Rewirable fuses, no RCD protection, scorching or a hot plastic smell. Any of those means it needs looking at now.

Tested before quoted

We test the circuits first, because a new board finds faults an old one tolerated. That way the price holds.

Your questions, answered

Is my old fuse box illegal?

No. An older board is not illegal and you are not required to replace it. It will usually show up as a finding on a safety report, and for a rented property that can matter.

Will a new board make my breakers trip more?

It can at first, because modern protection is more sensitive and will pick up faults the old board ignored. That is the protection working. We test first so we know what to expect.

How long does replacing one take?

Most are a day's work with the power off for a few hours in the middle. We tell you the timing when we quote so you can plan around it.
